Heritage through Play Good Practices Conference and Fair

The main theme of the conference and fair held on October 18, 2024, was the experiential and playful approach to heritage protection. The professional meeting took place within the framework of the Erasmus+ project GRACING.

Two years learning process, in the GRACING project, five localities in Harghita County – Sândominic, Ciucsângeorgiu, Remetea, Lunca de Jos și Frumoasa were implemented pilot projects.

The main objectives of the locally-based projects include sustainability, intercultural dialogue, intergenerational approach, gamification, co-creation, and the development of digital skills.

The first presentation of the conference, Serious games focused on gamification, which served as the starting point for the project, highlighting the possibilities of gamifying heritage protection. Methods and good examples related to the topic were illustrated by our Dutch project partner, 8D Games.

This was followed by the presentation of the pilot projects.

The project Non recuso laborem - The life of Bishop Márton Áron in Sândominic aimed to introduce the life and significant milestones of bishop Márton Áron through a treasure hunt route. During this activity, participants could discover new and substantial information about the bishop by scanning QR codes at each stop.

The project In the footsteps of the Honvéd General Gál Sándor in Ciucsângeorgiu creatively and playfully introduced the birthplace of General Gál Sándor by incorporating an alternative history lesson into the memorial house, enriched with a quiz and word search activities.

The goal of the project, titled Life in the Etnographic house of Remetea was to enhance the cultural activities of the etnographic house and to attract visitors. To achieve this, they designed a logo for the house, established connections with local schools, organized a short film competition, created question sets, and prepared puzzles and wooden models. By scanning the QR codes placed in the courtyard, visitors can also learn about the steps of traditional bread-making.

The project The „Csángórózsa” card game in Lunca de Jos was created as an extension of the “Csángórózsa” children’s activities. This board game, based on the logic of Dobble, features cards depicting the tangible world and utilitarian tools of the local folk culture. By scanning the QR code on the box, players can navigate to a website containing the game rules in Hungarian language.

In the project titled The route of milk in the village of Frumoasa (Milky way ?) a hiking trail has been established. The aim of the project is to playfully introduce knowledge related to cattle farming and to explain how milk is processed from the farm to the consumer. During the trail, participants can travel by bicycle or on foot, following the journey of milk. They can visit a local farmer to gather information about cattle raising and will ultimately visit the “Csengő” dairy manufacture. By following the trail, visitors can will also discover Frumoasa’s architectural heritage.

In the next phase of the conference, good practices were presented that can serve as examples for those working in cultural heritage protection.

The Henter-mansion in Sântimbru is a good example of rescued local heritage. Sântimbru Major’s Office successfully renovated the building, which was in a state of disrepair, and integrated it into the cultural and tourism cycle. It serves as an alternative educational venue and event space.

The PosTeleport project in Sânmartin showcased an unconventional village tour program. This initiative allows participants to explore both physical and virtual spaces, bringing the village's history to life. By scanning QR codes placed on mailboxes, visitors can access digitized photos of the current builders and former residents, descriptions of their trades, and family stories.

The WatchBear & AdvoCity – Bears and People for Common Future project is built on four pillars aimed at refining human-bear coexistence: Fest, Conf, Cave, and Watch.

Within the pillar of TusnadEcoBearCave a tourist visitor center has been established, illustrating safe and sustainable coexistence methods between bears and humans.

TusnadEcoBearWatch is an online platform (mobile application) for monitoring, which will serve as a communication and observation tool regarding environmental issues.

After the presentations, there was a fair and informal discussion, allowing project participants and interested individuals to share their experiences. Attendees could gather information about the projects scanning QR codes.

Participants pinned their feedback, lessons learned, and personal impressions on a symbolic tree representing the project. Few highlighted opinions: “recalling the past,” “becoming leaves from roots,” “we are rich,” “our cohesive community,” “rethinking and passing on,” “preservation of values.”
